The work features contemporary, abstract photographic details pervaded by the figure of one of the last Japanese samurai. Illustrated with India ink glazes, the man-at-arms looks proudly ahead, almost as if to challenge the fate that would see the demise of the samurai class shortly afterwards, during the Meiji period.
In the composition, you can feel the power of material and colour; at the same time, however, you are gripped by a feeling of introspection that suggests the suspension of time and favours a vision of “melancholic beauty”.
